Horticultural therapy (HT) is a treatment modality that uses plant materials and horticulture practices as a means to achieve wellness goals. HT is a holistic practice aimed at promoting well-being through connecting to nature. It encompasses all aspects of health - physical, social, spiritual, cognitive and emotional. A Horticultural Therapist is sufficiently trained in providing purposefully designed treatment interventions that promote and maintain these aspects of health.

A Horticultural Therapist is an asset to an interdisciplinary team as they are trained in conducting assessments and contributing to client treatment plans, observation and evaluation process.

HT is a goal oriented, evidence-based practice that uses research to support and guide its facilitation. An HT practice is created to meet a specific client population’s need, where targeted benefits and therapeutic outcomes are identified and achieved through engaging with nature.
